BECOMING A LAWYER IN SCOTLAND

Updated: Aug 4

In Scotland, there are four ways to become a lawyer. The first way is to study law at university and then pass the Scottish qualifying exam. The second way is to study law at university and then go on to do a postgraduate law degree. The third way is to study law at university but not take the Scottish qualifying exam, instead you will have to do the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice (DPLP) and then be admitted by the Law Society of Scotland. And finally, you can also become a lawyer by studying law outside of Scotland and then completing the LPC. The Diploma in Professional Legal Practice (DPLP) is the Scottish counterpart of the LPC.

LLB IN SCOTLAND

There are expedited, graduate-entry pathways available to you if you already have an undergraduate degree in a field other than law. To become a solicitor in Scotland, you must complete a 3-year LLB programme that has been condensed into 2 years. This programme will cover all the professional courses necessary by the Law Society of Scotland. It takes three years to earn a "regular" LLB. The typical student pursues a 4-year LLB with Honors programme. The typical length of study for the LLB is five years for part-time students. The Scottish LLB Law programmes provide you a solid basis for a career in law and aid in giving you real-world courtroom experience. The Law Society of Scotland and Faculty of Advocates both accredit the LLB Law degrees. The achievement of qualified legal status in Scotland requires this certification.

THE SUBJECTS YOU WILL STUDY

The programme of study shown below is typical for a full-time Scottish LLB student and includes both required coursework and electives that fully exempt graduates from the Law Society of Scotland's professional examinations. Please be aware that certain courses may change.

BECOMING A SOLICITOR

Entry into the legal profession in Scotland requires the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice. If you study full-time, the Diploma may be earned in 9 months; if you study part-time, it can take up to 2 years. It is a vocational course, the Diploma. By using your professional abilities in mock legal situations, you will gain the ethical guidelines, practical knowledge, and interpersonal skills needed by Scottish attorneys. For admittance into the solicitors and advocates sectors of the profession, a diploma is required. It complies with Stage 1 of the Professional Education and Training Standards of the Law Society of Scotland (PEAT 1). You are under the supervision of at least one Scottish-qualified attorney for the duration of your 2-year, paid traineeship. The Law Society of Scotland's compulsory Professional Education and Training Stage 2 (PEAT 2) is comprised of this traineeship. The assessments of PEAT 2 are as follows:

  • professionalism,

  • professional communication,

  • professional ethics and standards,

  • business, commercial, financial and practice awareness.

You will be in charge of finding a traineeship opportunity on your own. Once your traineeship is successfully completed, you may practise law as a solicitor.
