DIFFERENT AREAS OF LAW

All legal systems are based on law. But what is law? What does it consist of? In this section, we will explore different areas of law and how they differ from each other. Legal systems are based on laws and these laws are the basis for all legal systems. There are many different areas of law in the world, but you will focus on Contract Law, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Tort law and EU Law.

For example Contract law is the body of law that deals with agreements between two or more parties that are enforceable in a court of law. It includes any agreement that has been made with an exchange of goods, services, or money as well as any other types of agreements such as those not involving money or those entered into by one person on behalf of another person.

Furthermore, Criminal law is the body of laws and legal principles which deal with crimes and the punishment thereof. In many countries criminal justice policy is a sub-topic under its own right, often being referred to as "criminal policy" or "criminology." We have broken down each subject and the key information you will need into subject specific Core Series.

LEGISLATION AND CASE LAW

Legislation and case law are two different types of law that you need to understand in order to be a successful lawyer. Legislation is the codified version of what the government wants and it can be amended by parliament at any time. Case law is created by judges and it explains how legislation should be applied in different scenarios.

Both legislation and case law are important for lawyers because they provide guidance on how the law should be interpreted in different situations, but they serve different purposes. Legislation is a set of rules that can change over time whereas case law is about interpreting legislation and applying it to real-life scenarios. As a law student you will need how to read both.
