HOW TO USE THE WHITE BOOK IN LAW?

What is the White Book?

More judges and attorneys than any other legal source depend on The White Book, which is respected for its authority and commentary.

The sources of law relevant to the methods and processes used by the High Court and the County Court to manage civil cases under the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) are included in the White Book.

The White Book 2022 keeps the book up to date with all CPR revisions released in the additions to the 2021 version by containing the most recent CPR modifications. New editions of the Queen's Bench, Administrative Court, Commercial, and Circuit Commercial Court Guides have also been released, with all applicable analyses, current and relevant case law, and other updates.

Start using the White Book

Analyzing the contents found directly inside the front cover should be your first step when searching for anything. You may find the list of Rules there, along with a summary of what each element covers.

Most of the time, it'll be enough to get you into the right chapter. However, if you're looking for a specific item, you should turn to the book's back and use the index there as usual. Please note that both the front cover and the index of the White Book include references to both of the book's volumes.

Learning to navigate through the White Book

The Civil Procedure Rules' methods and practices in the High Court and county courts are covered by the White Book, which is a legal resource that deals with civil cases. The Civil Procedure Rules have authority over these courts (CPR).

The chapters of the Civil Cases Handbook are divided into subheadings that correspond to the subject matter that may or may not be on the test, just like the Bar Course syllabus, and the white book is divided into parts. An additional summary is provided at the end of each chapter of the Handbook to track your progress through the several themes covered in the syllabus. This is carried out to ensure that you are fully prepared for the MCQ test in 2023. This gives you the assurance that comes with knowing you have covered everything necessary to be well-prepared for the exam in 2023.

Using the White Book Law

Most of your grades will come from the evaluation and application of court cases, on the other hand. In light of everything said above, we recommend the following strategy for reading the white book:

  1. It is strongly advised that the Civil Cases Handbook be read through in full before moving ahead.

  2. The guide will either explain what is highlighted in the White Book or direct you there to look for it.

  3. Then read the more readable portion while compiling a reading list of all the cases it cites and downloading them.

  4. Get a cup of your favorite chai tea latte and sit down with a nice book before reading the cases.

  5. Make sure you have a highlighter on hand and mark the paragraphs that specifically discuss the subject you are reading about.

  6. Then arrange everything for storage!

  7. It is crucial to go through the Handbook before things become hectic since it is planned to be the collection of notes you will generally refer to over the course of the session.

The Bar Course

The Bar courses are the practical component of bar training. However, they are known by many different names and go by many different titles. The completion of the practical training portion of bar preparation is the end aim of all of these courses, regardless of the titles that different course providers (formerly BTPC) offer their courses. There are several names for the Bar course, including:

  • Bar/Barrister Education Program (abbreviated as BTC),

  • Bar Practice Training (abbreviated as BPC),

  • Bar Vocational Course, or BVC for short, and

  • Vocational Studies for Bar (BVS).

The Bar Course Provider's expectations

You may expect to get a variety of guidelines and instructions to work under. There are several approaches you may use for this.

  1. The best approach is to start by reading bold portions because those are the actual requirements. However, other than that, it didn't change much more than serving as a summary and preventing you from looking to have ignored the reading before class.

  2. The extremely small print that is not in bold contains beneficial information. The fine print will be the most interesting thing you have ever read, but it gets right to the point and is generally simple to understand.

  3. If you read this extra material, you will understand the difficulties in submitting an application based on that particular regulation.

  4. The Civil Cases Handbook is beneficial for students engaged in the Bar Course or Exams at this time when the BSB only requires that they study an overview of the white book as required reading.

  5. The Civil Cases Handbook is organized and structured to support that goal by making it easier for students to understand how what they are learning in their course will affect their daily lives.

The Civil Litigation Handbook

Students are given an introduction to the processes and procedures involved in bringing and defending civil litigation claims via the use of the Civil Litigation Handbook. Students enrolled in the SQE or Bar course would benefit tremendously from reading this work. This book follows the historical evolution of a civil litigation claim and gives practical information on counselling clients while ensuring that the principles are adhered to. The book is organised in the following way: Students will have a much easier time comprehending the nature of the litigation method as a whole after reading the relevant chapters, which explain how the process of litigation really works. Students are given examples that place their learning in a more practical perspective, and concerns pertaining to cost, best practise, and professional ethics are brought to their attention in a straightforward manner. Students will get the necessary amount of practical attention on alternative conflict resolution, and throughout the course, references to the Civil Procedure Rules will ensure that they are prepared for real-world practise.
